FACF President David Jeong, '53When you are looking for a good real estate investment, we are reminded by the real estate industry to think location, location, LOCATION. When I think of a society trying to create an ideal living environment for its citizenry, I am reminded to think education, education, EDUCATION and one more time... EDUCATION! I strongly believe that an educated populous can create a society of civility instilling a caring conscience to help people who are less fortunate. In the Talmud there is a saying that “When you teach your son, you teach your son’s sons” or as Ruby Manikan would say, “If you educate a woman, you educate a family.” You can be proud that your Foundation for the last 32 years has been empowered to promote EDUCATION with your generous contributions. I envision that some day all public high schools in Hawaii will have a 501(c)(3) foundation like ours as a means to promote EDUCATION.

This year’s annual membership meeting was a success thanks to co-chairpersons, Violet Kagawa ’41 and Guy Shibayama ’62. It was held on February 24 at the Japanese Cultural Center. The classes of ’58 and ’48 were honored with their golden and diamond diplomas, respectively. One other highlight at the meeting was presenting official high school diplomas to four war veterans who were deterred by World War II and never received their 1943 certificates. These brave citizens received what they rightfully deserved from Principal Catherine Payne along with a huge mahalo for their many sacrifices. Congratulations to Alfred Y. Arakaki, Ronald K. Y. Kam, Robert N. Katayama, and Tsuneshi Maruo.

Pastor Norman Nakanishi ’72 was our guest speaker. His inspiring message left many of us mesmerized. Not only did we listen with our ears, but also with our hearts.

Lastly, a motion was passed to shorten the name of the Foundation for business purposes to read “Farrington Foundation.” This does not change our name however as FACF... Farrington Alumni and Community Foundation.
